From Wrestling to Cricket: Sexual Allegations that shocked the whole Country

By Crox Media Desk: Recent allegations by Vinesh Phogat and several Indian other wrestlers accused Wrestling Federation Of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of Sexual Harassment have surprised the sporting federation. However, this is not the first time such allegations have come to the limelight. The most recent one is against Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh by a lady Coach. Amidst these allegations, let’s take look at some of the other harassment incidents that the country has seen in the past. 

Allegations against India U-17 Women’s football assistant Alex Ambrose 

In July 2022, India U17 women’s Football Association team assistant Coach Alex Ambrose has been sacked following allegations of sexual misconduct during their Europe Tour. After Complaint was filed to the All-India Football Federation (AIFF), the football body quickly brought Ambrose back two days ago. 

Roman Cyclist allegation against the National Team Coach RK Sharma 

In June 2022, a Roman Cyclist has complained of inappropriate behavior against National Team Coach RK Sharma during an overseas training camp in Slovenia. 

 Women Hockey team member accuses coach of Sexual Harassment 

In 2010, a member of the Indian Women’s Hockey team accused the team’s coach and Olympian, Maharaj Kishari Kaushik of Sexual harassment. 

Accountability

With such allegations, a normal question arises about the actions which are taken against the complaint. However, the official statistics tell a whole different story. As per RTI, between 2010 to 2020, there were around 45 complaints of Sexual Harassment to SAI (Sports Association of India), of which 29 are against sportspersons.

Some of the cases are still pending or waiting for the final judgment. It is time for the country to discuss this issue before athletes take up the charge and start a protest in Jantar Mantar.
