China’s Population decreased for the first time in 60 years, deaths outnumbered births last year

The world’s most populous country, China has witnessed a sudden decline in the population for the first time in 60 years after a steady years-long decline in its birthdate. 

By Crox Media Desk: The world’s most populous country, China has witnessed a sudden drop in its population, according to a report released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday. This fall has been reported for the first time in over 60 years after a steady and years-long decline in its birthdate. 

 The population of mainland China population declined by 8,50,000 people in 2022 to 1.41 billion. This country reported 9.56 billion and 10.41 million death in 2022, reported to CNBC. 

The data released by the National Bureau of Statistics revealed that new births declined by 13% in 2021 and it fell by 22% in 2022.

On the other hand, the country’s health authorities revealed that around 60,000 people died of COVID-19 in Chinese hospitals between December 8 and January 12, 2023, according to a report by CNBC. 

What Does it mean to the World?

This declining population is a sign of a demographic crisis in China. Deaths births last year for the first time in six decades, as per the report of the New York Times. 

According to the experts, the decline in the population is pushing China into a demographic crisis that will have great consequences in the century, not just for China but for the whole world. 

Major Steps to Control Birth Date Decline

The Chinese government last year accepted the country was on verge of a population decline by 2025.

Back in 2016, they relaxed the one-child policy that had been in place for 35 years, allowing families to have two children. In 2021 they allowed having three as it offered a range of incentives to couples such as tax benefits, property concessions, and cash handouts.
