The journalist was detained in Qatar during the World Cup in 2022 just because he was wearing an LGBTQ Community Rainbow T-shirt.
By Crox Media Desk: A US sports journalist said he was briefly detained by security staff in Qatar after he wore a rainbow T-shirt to the USA’s opener against Wales.
He was detained when he tried to enter the stadium while wearing a rainbow shirt in support of the LGBTQ community, where same-sex relationships are illegal.
Grant Wahl, who works for CBS Sports and writes a popular Substack column, said the security denied him entry to Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan and asked him to remove his T-shirt.
Wahl further said that the security commander later approached him and apologized for the incident and allowed him to the venue. Not only he received an apology letter from the FIFA’s soccer’s governing body, he wrote in his Substack column as reported by the Guardian.
Seven Europeans World cup playing countries earlier on Monday ditched respective captains to wear OneLove Armbands after FIFA threatened to issue yellow cards to any player wearing multi-coloured armband, that was introduced to support diversity and inclusion.
